The evolution of the electric vehicle

It all seems to have happened so quickly. We are now on the verge of “self-driving” vehicles and electric car sales are significantly on the rise. One thing is for sure, the market is changing and technology and pollution issues are having a huge impact on how our vehicles run and also how they are repaired.

According to one study in Norway, it is reported that all fuel-driven cars in the country will be banned by 2025. That is crazy to think about and while it seems pretty absurd right now, it is certainly not impossible. According to a report by the International Energy Agency, 2015 surpassed one million cars on the road with 1.26 million up and running. Just over 10 years ago, we were still measuring electric cars in hundreds.

Here are a few key stats on hybrid vehicles you may not know from a study done by the University of Michigan; (Courtesy on Ratchet and Wrench)

  • 80% of owners are over 50 years of age
  • Just under 50% of owners have $100,000 yearly household incomes
  • 80% are women.
  • 96% of owners have college educations

These purchases are researched and made for a good reason. Most owners are educated, affluent people who site “environmental issues” and “saving money” amongst their main reasons for purchase.

So what do you think is driving this influx in driving electric vehicles? Most talk about incentives and subsidies such as toll-free driving, free public parking and exemptions on heavy car taxes. Electric cars are allowed to drive in the HOV lane here in America and that is a major plus in busy cities getting to and from work.

How far can it go? As the 2025 Norway prediction shows, the targets are ambitious. What’s next? A city without cars seems ridiculous and it still seems some way off but things are definitely moving towards this. There are obvious down sides to this rise in electric vehicles. What happens when the HOV lane becomes just as busy as the other lanes? But things are definitely changing. Remember the days of no smartphones? Me either.
